Stuff that’s too good to ignore…John Knight

Knight Family_Picture_2011I’m very pleased that John Knight was able to be a part of this year’s Inclusion Fusion while working tirelessly with his team at Desiring God on their disability conference.

John serves as Director of Donor Partnerships at Desiring God. John and his wife Dianne parent their four children: Paul, Hannah, Daniel, and Johnny. Paul lives with multiple disabilities including blindness, autism, cognitive impairments and a seizure disorder. John blogs on issues of disability, the Bible, and the church at The Works of God. His presentation for Inclusion Fusion truly captured the spirit of the Web Summit…For the Sake of Your Own Joy! Why Your Church Should Want Families Like Mine. Check it out…

The presentations from Desiring God’s The Works of God…God’s Good Design in Disability conference are available here! Check out the presentations from Krista Horning, Greg Lucas, Mark Talbot, Nancy Guthrie and John Piper.

Stuff that’s too good to ignore…Rhett Smith

DSC_0753Rhett Smith shared a very powerful presentation for Inclusion Fusion 2012 in which he examined how our views on anxiety often exclude those struggling with it from our church communities…along with the ways in which God uses our anxiety for good-as a tool that pulls us closer to God.

Rhett is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in private practice in Plano, TX. In addition to his private practice, He is on staff of The Hideaway Experience, which is a 4-day marriage intensive in Amarillo, TX, and is the author of The Anxious Christian: Can God Use Your Anxiety for Good? (Moody, 2012), and the coming book, What It Means to be a Man: God’s Design for Us in a World Full of Extremes (Moody, 2013).

Here’s Rhett’s Inclusion Fusion 2012 video…Reframing Anxiety: The Inclusion of Anxiety in our Church Communities.

The Case For Key Ministry

key ministry final.inddFrom time to time, I’ve used this blog to sing the praises of our ministry staff and volunteers. Something I’ve never spoken about before is the amazing impact our team has  been able to make with relatively little financial support. We’ve operated Key Ministry over this past year for roughly the cost of a full time staff member’s salary and benefits at a typical church in our home region.

I’ve sought to be very thoughtful about the stewardship decisions we make as a family. My personal bias is to to invest the money for which God has made us responsible in such a way as to generate the greatest impact for Jesus upon the greatest number of people. Because of the generosity of our volunteers and the responsible spending habits of our staff and Board, I’d be hard-pressed to recommend a better return on investment for your financial resources dedicated to the work of the Kingdom than an investment in Key Ministry.

GroupHere’s some of what the team has accomplished in 2012 for considerably less than $100,000…

We provided live training to hundreds of pastors, church staff and volunteers in ten states (Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia).

Through the first eleven months of 2012, our blogs have had over 318,000 views from pastors, church leaders and family members in 131 countries.

Katie and Tony CampoloKey Ministry staff or volunteers were invited to teach at numerous regional or national ministry conferences, including…

  • The Blaze (Youth Ministry Conference), Montreat, NC
  • Accessibility Summit, McLean, VA
  • Children’s Ministry Web Summit
  • North American Christian Convention, Orlando, FL
  • Group Kidmin Conference, Chicago, IL
  • Faith and Disability Symposium, Katy, TX
  • Engage Children’s Ministry Conference, Mechanicsburg, PA

Key Ministry resources were included in the Special Needs Volunteer Training Pack developed by Christianity Today.

RK Key Ring Binder IconMinistry staff developed an updated Key Ring Binder…a comprehensive resource to walk individuals and churches through a step-by-step process to establish and implement an inclusive ministry for kids with disabilities and their families.

In September, we launched the new Key Ministry website. Our new website offers users the ability to access any Key Ministry resource in a single location on the Web. We provide over 100 free, downloadable resources, including a permanent disability ministry video library containing all of the content from Inclusion Fusion.

Free RespiteWe have completed, and are in the process of beta testing the new FREERESPITE website. We’re hoping to add 100 churches to the movement among Christ-honoring churches to provide free, high quality respite care for kids with disabilities and their “typical” siblings during 2013.

We hosted Inclusion Fusion 2012…the second Annual Special Needs Ministry Web Summit for hundreds of pastors, church staff, volunteers and families from across the U.S. and beyond, featuring a diverse faculty of 32 speakers representing the breadth and depth of the disability ministry movement.

A pretty fruitful year by any account! But we face unprecedented challenges in the New Year.

large door final.inddLast Fall, our Board made a decision to expand our staff in order to build the foundation for a much larger ministry organization. We sense a call to provide not just resources, but relationships. Church staff seeking to minister to families with complicated needs often need an experienced “someone” on the other end of the phone (or Skype/Face Time) to help them problem solve individualized solutions. We plan this year (God willing!) to pilot a “boots on the ground” strategy to position highly trained “Key Holders” in cities around the U.S. to provide personalized support.

Unfortunately, the expected financial support for our staff expansion didn’t materialize. We’re probably 25% larger than what we can sustain with our current base of support…predominantly individual donors augmented by modest support from a handful of churches and family foundations. God’s always blessed Key Ministry very richly and provided us with what we need. But we’re not going to be able to offer more than we do now unless we significantly expand our current base of support. Here’s what I’d appreciate from our supporters…

PRAY! Pray that God would allow us to greatly expand His territory! Pray for our staff members who love the ministry they get to do…Pray that they’ll have the resources to grow it!

Spread the word. We believe the breadth and depth of our FREE resources for churches seeking to serve families with disabilities, both visible and hidden, is unsurpassed. The proliferation of social media and the decision by Facebook to filter what you see in your News Feed to force nonprofits like Key Ministry to pay to share resources with our “fans” makes us dependent upon you to get the word out about what we do.

Consider supporting Key Ministry financially if you’ve never given to us before, or consider increasing your donation if you’ve given in the past. Obviously, supporting your home church needs to be a priority. At the same time, God does expect us to use our brains when we open our wallets and prayerfully considering where our money can have the greatest Kingdom impact is an act of worship in and of itself. Our family makes a personally significant contribution to the work of Key Ministry. I’d ask you to consider doing the same as 2012…and our tenth year of ministry comes to a close.

Stuff that’s too good to ignore…Gillian Marchenko

Gillian MarchenkoGillian Marchenko is a writer, speaker and advocate for kids with special needs and their families who, together with her husband Sergei, serves a church in Chicago (Christian Fellowship Church) where families of kids with disabilities are welcome. She leads a ministry (The King’s Table) offering weekly respite care to families of children with special needs, and an inclusive ministry for weekend worship.

Gillian has written very authentically and poignantly about her experiences as the mother  of four children… one (Polly) with an extra chromosome who has had a stroke, two brain surgeries and a diagnosis of Moyamoya Disease, and another (Evangeline) who came to their family through Reece’s Rainbow, an organization that helps kids with Down Syndrome from around the world find loving families. For this year’s Inclusion Fusion, she spoke on the topic…Loss and Grief in Parenting Children With Special Needs.

One of our blog readers searched for Inclusion Fusion after coming across a blurb on the Internet about Gillian’s presentation following the conclusion of the Web Summit, saddened that she had missed out on Gillian’s talk. “Zeemaid“…this is for you!

Again…We’re asking our leaders to forward the links to this post/video to pastors, church staff members or families interested in Gillian’s discussion of loss and grief in parenting children with special needs, along with other Inclusion Fusion presentations in the Stuff That’s Too Good to Ignore series.

Here’s Gillian…

Stuff that’s too good to ignore…Matthew Stanford

Stanford_Color_HDDr. Matthew Stanford from Baylor University and Mental Health Grace Alliance did a fabulous talk for this year’s Inclusion Fusion on the topic of Viewing Mental Illness Through the Eyes of Faith. Matt’s talk should be required viewing for pastors and church staff seeking to more effectively minister to families impacted by mental illness. Some of the topics Matt addressed in this relatively brief talk (20 minutes) included:

  • What is a Biblical and clinical understanding/response to mental illness?
  • How to recognize mental illness.
  • The essential role of the church in the recovery and treatment process.
  • How to respond to families dealing with mental illness.
  • How to create mental health related supportive care within the church.
  • Resources to help families navigate the health care system and everyday life.

As a reminder, please forward the link to this post/video to pastors, church staff members or families who would have interest in the topic of mental health and faith…

Cara Daily…Do I have to have surgery to open my heart to Jesus?

Cara Daily with JoniWe’re continuing our series on Stuff That’s Too Good to Ignore with a look back at a fabulous interview Katie Wetherbee did with Dr. Cara Daily for this year’s Inclusion Fusion on the topic of communicating abstract concepts about God and faith to children and teens with autism spectrum disorders who think very concretely.

As a reminder, we’re doing this series to engage our readers in sharing links to the individual blog posts or videos with pastors, church staff members, volunteers or families who would be blessed by the content.

Stuff that’s too good to ignore…Beth Guckenberger

My most frequent thought following this year’s Inclusion Fusion involved the wish that even more church leaders and families could have seen more of the presentations and developed connections with more of the speakers and ministries represented in the Special Needs Ministry Web Summit. Throughout the month of December, I’m going to share some of the videos and presentations from Inclusion Fusion that most impacted me.

I’d appreciate the help of our readers in sharing links to the individual blog posts or videos with pastors, church staff members, volunteers or families who would be blessed by the content.

From a resource development standpoint, providing information and materials to help churches support families who adopt children likely to have special needs will be a big theme on this blog next year. Beth Guckenberger and her organization, Back2Back Ministries are doing some great work in this area. Here’s her presentation from this past year’s Inclusion Fusion, Holistically Serving the Adopted/Foster Child

Next Steps for the Disability Ministry Movement…

One prominent topic of conversation in the nightly Tweetchats that occurred during Inclusion Fusion 2012 involved “next steps” for the disability ministry movement. God is clearly raising up many empowered leaders to advance the cause of including families impacted by disabilities at church. But what common strategies should leaders and organizations adopt in order for the movement to advance?

We need to think about disability more broadly. The population of families for whom physical disabilities remain a barrier to church attendance is relatively small. The population of children and adults with intellectual disabilities is also fairly small when compared to the general population. Only when we include kids and adults with emotional, behavioral and developmental disabilities do the numbers become too large for church leaders to ignore. We also reduce the number of potential advocates for disability inclusion when we define “disability” or “special needs” too narrowly.

We need to proactively seek to develop relationships with leaders in other areas of ministry. The disability ministry movement is best served through the development of partnerships with senior pastors, youth pastors, children’s ministry leaders and proponents of family ministry. We need to listen to the objections raised by other ministry leaders and consider their feedback in developing creative strategies for inclusion ministry that work while taking into account the competing demands and pressures for volunteers and resources other ministry leaders face.

We need to help other ministry leaders become more effective in their work. We’ll develop credibility in the larger church by using the relationships we build to help other ministry leaders solve problems. We’d want a senior pastor or executive pastor to immediately consider the need to have disability ministry leaders at the table when contemplating adoption or foster care initiatives, examining reasons why families leave the church, evaluating the need for counseling ministries and discussions of protection policies for children and youth, just to name a few situations in which our input might be useful.

We need to make it easy for churches to become intentional about including individuals with disabilities and their families. As we concluded in our No Excuses post, resources are available to help support church leaders in ministering to nearly any family struggling with nearly any disability. We can work together through becoming better acquainted with the resources of one another’s ministries in order to find resources that complement our own, and to use our respective platforms to make it easier for church staff and volunteers to find the best resources to support their ministry needs. While funding is a pressing issue for nearly every disability ministry, I can’t help but believe that God will provide the necessary supports for every ministry that seeks first to enlarge His Kingdom.

Faces of the Movement…Ryan Wolfe

Ryan Wolfe is unique among the speakers for this year’s Inclusion Fusion in that our team discovered Ryan and his ministry through a news story this past Spring on local Cleveland television.

Ryan serves as Pastor to the Developmentally Disabled community of Stark County through his staff position at First Christian Church in Canton, OH. Ryan is married to his best friend and is father to two amazing children. His family clings to two Bible verses. Micah 6:8 “He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Proverbs 31:8 “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed.”. These verses have propelled Ryan and his family into outreach to persons with developmental disabilities and their families in his surrounding community. Ryan’s church hosts a day treatment program funded by the county’s developmental disabilities Board, puts on a Prom for over 400 adults, and is involved with outreach through sports. These ministry efforts have been blessed by God because they are near to His heart.

Ryan’s video for Inclusion Fusion was If You Build It, They Will Come. Here’s a brief introduction to Ryan’s presentation, followed by his video for Inclusion Fusion…

Several years ago I read a book “The Present Future” by Reggie McNeal that challenged me to look at ministry in a way I had never considered before. For the first time I saw myself as a missionary in my own community. My wife and I began coaching as volunteers in our local Challenger Baseball League. This is a division of Little League baseball for children with disabilities. As our relationships continues to develop our eyes were opened to so many possibilities. One of those possibilities was the fact that the league had grown so much that they did not have enough fields to play on. Our church like most others has underutilized space. We had the space, there was a need, and we met that need! We raised over $50,000 in less than a year and built a top notch baseball facility for the children of our community with disabilities. This effort cost the church ZERO dollars! We now have during baseball season at least two teams on the field every night of the week. We have also seen several families from the league start to attend our church. Edgewood Field is not only used by the Challenger League but it is also now the home field of two of our local Special Olympics softball teams. We can’t wait to share with you ideas on how to not only see the needs of your community but also to meet the needs of your community.

Faces of the Movement…Laura Lee Wright

Laura Lee Wright once had a friend who described her as a “Ministry Junkie”.  Laura Lee has a strong passion for developing people into strong disciples of Christ and to see the universal church become whole.  The church does not become whole until all persons are fully included into all aspects of church life, especially those living with disabilities.   Over the last decade, Laura Lee has worked globally in large and small churches to help congregations include persons with disabilities.

Our Key Ministry team has had the opportunity to work with Laura Lee for several years while she served at Northland Church in Central Florida. She was instrumental in the development of Northland’s renowned Access Ministries for children and adults , and several members of our team had the opportunity to speak at a major disability ministry conference held at the church two years ago.

Just recently, Laura Lee announced through her blog plans for a ministry transition. She has founded Table Ministries, a consulting agency helping churches and parachurch organizations to understand the complexities of disabilities, and helping them to create space at the table. She has also begun her pursuit of a PhD in leadership with the hopes of writing her dissertation of disability and leadership.  She sits on the Young Life Capernaum National Committee and loves hanging out with Young Life friends and leaders.

Laura Lee was very instrumental in the development of this year’s Inclusion Fusion conference. She helped us make connections with folks at Young Life Capernaum, leading to the involvement of speakers including Nick Palermo, Amy Jacober and Ben Conner. For those of you who didn’t have an opportunity to see Laura Lee’s Inclusion Fusion presentation on the topic of Leading With a Limp, her presentation is available through the first weekend of December at the Inclusion Fusion website (free registration required).

I’d highly recommend Laura Lee as a consultant to any church seeking to establish a comprehensive disability ministry program serving adults as well as children. We’re anticipating God will continue to use Laura Lee very productively to advance the cause of His Kingdom!
