We also plan some special presentations from our Key Ministry staff , along with lots of opportunities for online interaction with our presenters. Barb Dittrich from our Program Committee has graciously agreed to host nightly Tweetchats during the Web Summit. We’re also planning some opportunities for live, online videoconferencing with several of our conference presenters…more on that later.

To register for Inclusion Fusion 2012…

Click here for new user registration to the Web Summit. You’ll be asked for some very basic information (a user name, first, last name, city and e-mail address). After you register, you’ll be sent a password you’ll use to log in before and during the conference. It’s that easy.

We do need your help in making Inclusion Fusion 2012 a success. Since Key Ministry does this all for free, we have no “marketing budget” for the Web Summit. We’re counting on you to get the word out to any pastors, church staff ministry volunteers and families who would be interested in joining us for this year’s Inclusion Fusion. Here’s what you can do…

Share the link to this blog post with anyone who might be interested in Inclusion Fusion 2012.

“Like” Key Ministry and Inclusion Fusion on Facebook…because Facebook now demands money for “ads” to ensure everyone sees content they “like.” To increase the possibility of receiving updates through Facebook, feel free to send me a friend request.

Follow Key Ministry on Twitter…the official “hashtag” for the Web Summit will be #inclusionfusion2012.

Ministries You Should Know…

Yesterday, we called your attention to our blog makeover and pointed out links to several leaders in the disability ministry movement doing neat things to advance inclusion of families impacted by disability in the church. Today, we’ll encourage you to check out the “Ministries We Like” links in the right sidebar of the blog, and point out several organizations with resources of note…

John and Ann Holmes started Restoration Church several years ago in a suburb of Pittsburgh as a place with a special heart for families affected by disability. Both John and Ann have completed the certificate program in disability ministry through Joni and Friends and the Christian Institute on Disability. Restoration Church is unique in the extent to which persons with disabilities and their families are represented within the church body. Ann has a personal blog, Restoration Heart.

SNAPPIN’ Ministries (Special Needs Parents’ Network) has recently launched a program to train parent mentors to come alongside families of kids with special needs. The mentor program is born of a deep commitment to help parents to go from a place of tragedy to triumph, from a point where special needs make life feel like a burden to a point where challenges are transformed into a blessing.  The aim is to equip every parent of a child with special needs to be a full ambassador of Christ.

Young Life Capernaum gives young people with intellectual and developmental disabilities the chance to experience fun and adventure, to develop fulfilling friendships and to challenge their limits while building self-esteem through club, camp and other exciting activities. Young Life staff and volunteers model Christ’s unconditional love and acceptance as they walk alongside these young adults — filling their lives with love and support.

Sunday…MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT!

Key Ministry is pleased to invite you to check out our new website. A few things about our blog makeover…

We did a few things last week to tidy up the appearance of the blog…design changes to blend the appearance of Church4EveryChild into the look we used for the new Key Ministry website.

While updating the look of the blog, we also updated the links posted along the right hand side of the page. You’ll notice a few changes…

In the toolbar near the top of the page as well as in the sidebar, Key Ministry’s Twitter page and feed are now accessible

Below the “Top Posts” section in the right hand sidebar, readers can now access either links to, or the complete text of all of our earlier blog series.

Of greatest significance to readers are the updates to our “Blogroll” and “Ministries We Like” sections in the right hand sidebar. One of the neat things we’ve been privileged to observe in our ten years of ministry is the way in which God has been raising up new leaders and ministry organizations to welcome and serve kids with disabilities and their families. In the course of updating our blog, we’d like to call your attention to a few of the individuals and organizations we’ve connected with in the past year doing great work in the disability ministry field. I’ll share three individuals whose links now appear in the sidebar today, and three organizations in tomorrow’s blog post.

Gillian Marchenko is a Christian, wife, mother, writer, speaker, and advocate for individuals with special needs. She writes and speaks about parenting kids with Down syndrome, faith, imperfection, and adoption. Her husband serves as pastor at Christian Fellowship Church in Chicago, where Gillian has been involved in launching a respite ministry for families of kids with special needs. Here’s an outstanding post on the importance of mothers seeking help for depression for the sake of their children and family.

John Knight is Director of Donor Partnerships at Desiring God. He is married to Dianne and together they parent their four children: Paul, Hannah, Daniel, and Johnny. Paul lives with multiple disabilities including blindness, autism, cognitive impairments and a seizure disorder. John blogs on issues of disability, the Bible, and the church. John is a champion for the value of persons with disabilities within the life of the church, and is busy putting together the Desiring God Disability Conference, to be held this coming November 8th in Minneapolis.

Mike Beates is a parent of a 30 year old who lives with profound disabilities related to a chromosomal anomaly. He has served since 2000 on the International Board of Directors at Joni and Friends and is author of Disability and the Gospel (Crossway, 2012).

Tomorrow, we’ll introduce you to several ministry organizations you should get to know.

Key Ministry is pleased to invite you to check out our new website. Over 180 FREE, downloadable resources are available to pastors, church staff and volunteers seeking to serve kids with disabilities and their families. Registration for Inclusion Fusion 2012 Opens Sunday, September 16!

I’m pleased to announce the opening of registration for Inclusion Fusion 2012, Key Ministry’s FREE worldwide Special Needs Ministry Web Summit, on Sunday, September 16th! This year’s Inclusion Fusion will take place from November 12th-16th, and is accessible everywhere an Internet connection is available on your computer, tablet or smart phone.

We’ll be announcing our faculty lineup as well this Sunday. Inclusion Fusion promises to be bigger and better than our inaugural Web Summit last November, which was attended by over 1,300 pastors, church leaders, volunteers and family members from 42 states and five countries. The theme of this year’s Web Summit is “Why”…Why is it so important for churches to reach out to and serve families impacted by disabilities?

Last year’s Keynote Speaker, Chuck Swindoll, did a fabulous job of answering the question “Why?” Here’s Chuck’s brief featured presentation from last year’s Inclusion Fusion, that provides the perfect lead-in to this year’s Web Summit…

Key Ministry is pleased to invite you to check out our new website. Over 180 FREE, downloadable resources are available to pastors, church staff and volunteers seeking to serve kids with disabilities and their families. Everything you need to join the movement!

We’re continuing our guided tour of the free resources available to church staff and volunteers through the new Key Ministry website. Today, we’ll direct you to our FREERESPITE manual…a comprehensive resource for churches seeking to serve families of kids with disabilities by meeting a pressing and immediate need.

Why would a church want to consider regularly hosting respite events?

Raising a child with has special needs can be physically, emotionally, and financially draining. A limited amount of respite care may be available from government-funded agencies, but care is expensive, waiting lists are often long, the quality of care can be very inconsistent, and middle-class families can have great difficulty accessing care.

According to information compiled by the National Resource Center for Community Based Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Grants (CBCAP), 75%  of families with children ages 0-17 receiving support from the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program because of a disability had unmet respite needs, but only 8% were accessing respite care. Children with disabilities are almost four times more likely to be victims of neglect, physical abuse or emotional abuse, and almost three times more likely to be victims of sexual abuse than children without disabilities.

Churches can step in the gap to meet an immediate need, provide an opportunity for members and attendees to serve others in a practical way and connect with families who are more likely than others in their communities to lack a meaningful connection with a local church through offering respite events.

What do respite events look like? They generally look like a party! Respite events are typically held on weekend nights for approximately three or four hours. Each guest with a disability, (as well as their typically developing siblings) is assigned a volunteer buddy. The volunteer and the guest spend time doing fun activities throughout the church while the guest’s parent(s) or caregivers enjoy the evening out for some well-deserved time off. This might mean a romantic dinner and a movie, a nap, a trip to the spa, or time to complete errands…whatever the parent/caregiver desires.

Our FREERESPITE manual provides a comprehensive resource to churches seeking to offer high quality respite care. Included are resources to assist in…

  • Casting vision within the church for a respite ministry
  • Recruiting volunteers
  • Managing event logistics
  • Creating proper environments for respite events
  • Marketing/communication of respite events
  • Safety/risk management strategies
  • Managing guest and volunteer registration
  • Developing activities/themes for respite events
  • Sample volunteer and team job descriptions
  • Training resources for event volunteers

In order to access all of these FREE resources, follow this link to the website, click on the “Resources” box in the toolbar at the top of the home page, and (if you haven’t already) register for the site.

We’ve love to have your church consider partnering with us as we seek to expand the FREERESPITE movement. We’re seeking to make free, high-quality, church-based respite care available every weekend in every major metropolitan area in the U.S. If you’re interested in joining us, contact Rebecca Hamilton (rebecca@keyministry.org).

We need you to help us spread the word about Key Ministry and our new website. Please forward the link to the website to any church staff or volunteers interested in serving kids or teens with disabilities and their families.

Partying With a Purpose

We’re continuing our guided tour of the free resources available to church staff and volunteers through the new Key Ministry website. Today, we’ll look at “Party With a Purpose,” a complete guide for churches seeking to develop outwardly-focused inclusion events. We’ll also share our Special Events toolbox, including resources for doing an inclusive Vacation Bible School, hosting neighborhood parties and doing inclusion ministry outside the walls of the church.

Note: Click on the “Resources” box in the toolbar at the top of the home page of our new website if you haven’t already registered. You’ll be prompted to establish a user name and password that will provide you access to every resource on the site.

Want your church to put together a prom for teens or young adults in your community? You’ve come to the right place…

Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

Luke 14:12-14 (NIV)

The Prom is a modern day expression of what Jesus is describing to us in the book of Luke. It’s so much more than a party. It’s an outreach where the church extends an invitation to those who are so often overlooked by society, with no strings attached. We have all of the resources to guide your church through the process of hosting a prom.

We can help lay out for your church leadership the “Why?” of hosting a prom. We have resources to help your church know where to begin in planning a prom. We can help you develop a plan for recruiting volunteers, managing logistics and handling communication. We have job descriptions for volunteers on every team required for a successful event. We have sample brochures, sample letters to send to vendors when seeking donations to support your event and sample press releases. We have resources to help you brand your event. We have pretty much everything you need short of Harmony and the rest of our crew showing up in person to serve on your leadership team.

We’ve also got tools in our resource kit to help your church serve kids with disabilities and their families through other types of special events. We have a download to help your church include kids in Advent activities and events. We have downloads on planning inclusive parties outside the church, including an inclusive neighborhood party. We also have a resource for children’s pastors and volunteers with strategies for accommodating kids with disabilities during Vacation Bible School!

Sunday: We’ll continue our tour of Key Ministry’s new website by checking out the Inclusion Fusion Disability Ministry Video Library.

Your roadmap for launching an inclusive disability ministry

This week, we’re giving readers a guided tour of the free resources available to church staff and volunteers through the new Key Ministry website. Today, we’ll look at the Key Ring Binder…our roadmap for pastors, church staff and families seeking to launch inclusive ministry to kids with disabilities, their parents and siblings.

Note: To access the resources we’ll be discussing today, click on the “Resources” box in the toolbar at the top of the home page of our new website. You’ll be prompted to register for the site and establish a user name and password that will provide you access to every resource on the site.

Our Key Ring Binder is the modern-day descendent of the original Key Ministry toolkit on CD-ROM. The Binder is intended to be a comprehensive resource to walk individuals and churches through a step-by-step process in establishing and implementing inclusive ministry for kids with disabilities and their families. This version of the Binder has 39 downloadable .pdf files covering a wide range of topics churches confront in the course of serving kids with disabilities.

Some of the subjects covered in the Binder include…

  • A readiness assessment for churches considering special needs ministry
  • An article from Rev. Hu Auburn (one of our founding Board members) on the Biblical foundation for disability ministry
  • Sample mission and vision statements for inclusive ministries
  • Strategies for starting a disability ministry
  • Strategies for increasing congregational awareness of the needs of families impacted by disabilities
  • Establishing a buddy system
  • Finding volunteers
  • Policies and procedures
  • Strategies for designing ministry environments
  • Handouts on “People-First Language” for church staff and volunteers
  • Diagnosis-specific handouts for staff, volunteers
  • Resource links for additional information
  • Strategies for classroom teachers serving kids with disabilities
  • A sample privacy covenant for staff and volunteers

The Key Ring Binder is the culmination of many hours of work, and many years of practical ministry experience that Katie Wetherbee, our Director of Training, and Harmony Hensley, our Director of Ministry Advancement, brought to the project. Better yet, Katie and Harmony, as well as Rebecca Hamilton, our Director of Ministry Operations, are no further away than an e-mail or a phone call if you or your church need to tap their expertise. Hit the “Contact Us” box on the Toolbar at the top of the page and give us a call!

Friday: We’ll look at “Party With a Purpose,” a complete guide for churches seeking to develop outwardly-focused inclusion events. This resource provides step-by-step instructions for hosting special events, including a Special Needs Prom or Luau. We’ll also share our Special Events toolbox, including resources for doing an inclusive Vacation Bible School, hosting neighborhood parties and doing inclusion ministry outside the walls of the church.

A Vision Fulfilled…The NEW Key Ministry Website

I’m very pleased to announce that the NEW Key Ministry website is up and running as of today.

Our new website is the culmination of work on the part of our team that dates back to at least 2005, when we began work on our original “toolkit” on CD-ROM.

I found one of our internal documents from when we began our planning process for electronic ministry. We asked each team member a series of questions, beginning with What do you need to achieve in order to consider this web development project a success? My response…

We need a website that allows us to offer our ministry resources to churches everywhere, including places where we don’t yet have the time or resources to travel personally. I want a person in another city to be able to refer their church to this site, and for staff/volunteers at their church to be able to connect with us, and access what they need to launch this type of ministry. I want this site (and related tools) to help us cast influence among leaders in the worldwide church. We’re providing a service and leading a movement. I want the site to reflect the love we have for Jesus, the passion we have for serving, and the fun we have in serving together.

I thought our team nailed it. Kudos to Harmony, Katie and Rebecca for a job well-done, but never complete. We’ll never stop adding tools and resources to a site designed to help churches welcome and serve kids with disabilities and their families.

In my mind, the most valuable design feature of the website is offering users the ability to access any Key Ministry resource in a single location on the Web.

From our home page, pastors, church staff, volunteers, family members and caregivers can register for upcoming training events, request access to our library of downloadable ministry resources, contact our staff for a training or consultation request, access the content of any or all of our three official ministry blogs, access success stories from our friends across the U.S. and beyond in churches we serve, or contribute their time, talent and treasure to the expansion of God’s Kingdom through the work of Key Ministry.

I’ll spend the remainder of this week helping you to discover all of the useful resources and content available through the new Key Ministry website. Before I continue, there are two things I need you to do…

First, on your initial trip to the website, I’d encourage you to click on the “Resources” box in the toolbar at the top of the home page. You’ll be prompted to register for the site and establish a user name and password that will provide you access to every resource on the site.

After you register and do a little exploring, we need you to help us spread the word about Key Ministry and our new website. Please forward the link to this blog post or the link to  the website to any church staff or volunteers interested in serving kids or teens with disabilities and their families.

Best of all, our new website, like every Key Ministry resource, is made available FREE OF CHARGE…in the same way that God offers His grace freely to everyone who puts their faith and trust in His Son, Jesus Christ!

Here’s our schedule for the remainder of the week:

Thursday: We’ll explore the contents of the Key Ring Binder, a comprehensive “how to” manual for pastors, church staff and volunteers seeking to launch a ministry inclusive of kids with disabilities and their families in their local church.

Sunday: We’ll look at our FREERESPITE manual and resources, containing all the essentials for churches interested in “joining the movement” of Christ-honoring churches providing free respite care to kids with disabilities and their siblings.

Next week: We’ll look at a favorite resource of mine…the beginning of our permanent disability ministry video training library designed to serve as a lasting legacy of our Inclusion Fusion Disability Ministry Web Summit.

I’m honored that God chose to use our team to play an important part in making a ministry resource like this available. I’m confident you and your church will be empowered by God to put it to good use!

Key Ministry Fall Preview

Our team at Key Ministry is very much looking forward to the ways in which churches will use the new tools and resources we’re making available this Fall to support the work of welcoming and serving kids with disabilities and their families.

In addition to Katie Wetherbee’s upcoming appearance at the Group Kidmin Conference and Inclusion Fusion, we’ll have several opportunities this Fall for church leaders and volunteers to receive training live and in-person.

Here’s a preview of what we have in store for you on this blog for Fall, 2012…

During the coming week (September 4-9), I’ll take you on a personal tour through all of the new resources available on the new Key Ministry website. Our ministry team has done a fabulous job of assembling 180 FREE, downloadable resources for church staff, volunteers and families. We’ll help you discover the resources most likely to be of help to you and your church.

Beginning in mid-September, and leading up to Inclusion Fusion 2012, we’re going to present a blog series, Faces of the Movement intended to introduce you to some fabulous leaders you’ll see and hear who are making great contributions to the movement among Christ-honoring churches to embrace families of kids with disabilities. We’ll have in-depth interviews with authors of some new books that are helping to fuel the movement and help you make connections with great people who are being used by God in advancing His Kingdom.

During Inclusion Fusion 2012 (scheduled for November 12-16), I’ll call your attention to speakers with a particularly interesting perspective or topic, and help you to connect with the conference faculty through live, interactive events throughout the Web Summit.

After Thanksgiving, I’m considering two different blog series. One series will address the topic Understanding Schizophrenia. The other series is occasioned by Key Ministry’s tenth anniversary of serving churches on December 24th.  I’d like to look back at what our team has learned in the past ten years and give our readers and the churches we serve a preview of things to come should the Lord tarry in His return.

Thanks for your prayers and support on behalf of the mission and people of Key Ministry! Please spread the word about our FREE resources…because we put nearly all of our finances into people to offer training, consultation and support to churches, we count on all of you to help publicize and share our resources.

**************************************************************************************************************

Key Ministry will be celebrating our tenth anniversary later this year, but churches and families everywhere will be getting the presents. Stay tuned for the launch of the new keyministry.org on Tuesday, September 4th.

Coming Tuesday…the NEW www.keyministry.org

We’re marking the beginning of our tenth anniversary year at Key Ministry by taking our mission to help churches serve families affected by disability to an exciting new level.  On Tuesday, September 4, we’ll launch our new and improved ministry website, loaded with features to empower, equip, and unleash ministry leaders to create an inclusive culture in the local church.   When opening the new site, you can enjoy…

The Resource Kit

First, visitors will notice the addition of a FREE resource kit with over 180 unique downloadable resources to launch and grow disability ministry initiatives in churches across the U.S. and beyond.  Simply create a username and password and the options are endless.  The Resource Kit includes the following categories:

  • FREE RESPITE – Everything you need to join the movement. www.FREERESPITE.com – coming this fall!
  • Inclusion Fusion Disability Ministry Library – Video training from ministry leaders across the country;
  • Key Ring Binder – Your ignition key for launching Inclusion Ministry;
  • Key TV – What’s new in disability ministry? Tune in and find out!
  • Party with a Purpose – Party planning tools and tips to make a splash in the disability community!
  • Special Events – Out-of-the-box ways to energize your Inclusion Ministry;
  • The Workbench – Come get connected with the latest and greatest teaching tools and techniques to enhance your ministry

Requests for Training & Consultation

If your church needs help serving kids with special needs, or if you know a church who does, just send them here! Guests will be directed to an automated form that asks for specific information; based on this information, we’ll know the best way to follow up and help.

Church Connection

Our team at Key Ministry has the pleasure of serving and connecting with incredible ministry leaders in churches across the country every day. We understand it can be an intimidating process for families affected by disability to find a church home.

The Church Connection is a place where families can connect with churches that have a heart for disability ministry. Churches featured here have formally connected with Key Ministry through training, JAM Sessions (free one-day workshops on inclusion ministry), FREERESPITE, or consultation. We’ve tried to give visitors a snapshot of what inclusive offerings each church features, ranging from children’s ministry to adult programming.

We are excited to expand this database as we work together to create “a church for every child”.

Success Stories

We know that encouragement is important to anyone leading a ministry initiative.  It can often seem like a lonely place.  We have created a space to share success stories from other ministry leaders who have championed inclusion in their local church.  Visitors will be encouraged as they hear about the great things God is doing!

Social Media Connection

Social Media has changed the way we all connect, both personally and professionally.  Now you can connect with Key Ministry through a wide range of social media outlets from one convenient place.

 Social media

We are so excited to have a new space to engage even more ministry leaders in the disability ministry movement.  We hope you’ll stop by and take a look around! All of our resources…as they have been since day one, are offered free of charge to churches seeking to welcome and serve kids with disabilities and their families.

The website may feel a little overwhelming at first. I’ll be doing a series of blog posts next week to walk you through the resources available at keyministry.org.
